1931 Ariel SQ4 - Wheels & Mudguards

Web Update Email Notification Service

Pictures of the front and rear wheels, The mudguards are on hold, ready to be serviced.

The front wheel are an early Ariel ´28 / ´29 but I am still missing a date on the rear wheel, is it original at all!!

Front Wheel:

113-1315_IMG.JPG (41269 bytes)113-1317_IMG.JPG (43540 bytes)114-1426_IMG.JPG (37487 bytes)115-1539_IMG.JPG (35113 bytes)115-1540_IMG.JPG (36446 bytes)115-1541_IMG.JPG (46900 bytes)115-1542_IMG.JPG (48293 bytes)115-1543_IMG.JPG (55557 bytes)115-1544_IMG.JPG (28508 bytes)115-1545_IMG.JPG (24733 bytes)115-1546_IMG.JPG (38715 bytes)115-1547_IMG.JPG (66087 bytes)

Despite its early date, its in extremely good condition. The above HUB was swapped with a correct HUB from Tony Barnett, He was looking for my type and I was looking for his type, so everyone was happy.

front1.jpg (30286 bytes)front2.jpg (29750 bytes) Here you can se one of its characteristics - The spoke heads are all pointing outwards, because of the cover plate on the brake plate.

front3.jpg (29502 bytes)

This one is the correct one from 1930 - 19XX (help me here)

More pictures of the front hub taken in my work shed:

Rear Wheel:

112-1280_IMG.JPG (44298 bytes)112-1284_IMG.JPG (49275 bytes)113-1312_IMG.JPG (45738 bytes)113-1313_IMG.JPG (50269 bytes)113-1314_IMG.JPG (54933 bytes)113-1316_IMG.JPG (54184 bytes)113-1318_IMG.JPG (54723 bytes)114-1418_IMG.JPG (48142 bytes)114-1419_IMG.JPG (41476 bytes)114-1420_IMG.JPG (49337 bytes)114-1421_IMG.JPG (33160 bytes)

Now its cleaned off, The hub has been identified, and is a 1932-1934 version, so I am looking for another rear HUB.... this one can go into the deal.

114-1462_IMG.JPG (44006 bytes)114-1463_IMG.JPG (39802 bytes)114-1464_IMG.JPG (29489 bytes)114-1465_IMG.JPG (39979 bytes)114-1466_IMG.JPG (44353 bytes)114-1469_IMG.JPG (34639 bytes)114-1470_IMG.JPG (44072 bytes)114-1471_IMG.JPG (39483 bytes)

The spoke-rim is spot welded on, I have not observed this on other Ariel HUBS.

114-1467_IMG.JPG (51905 bytes)

The hub is in OK condition, just needs some hard work and a pair of new bearings. Spokes + rim is discarded.

As I announced on the AOMCC discussion group that I needed a rear hub for a ´31 Cammy, I was contacted by Victor Horley, who happens to be in need of a ´32 hub for a future project, so this was also happy swap.

120-2087_IMG.JPG (31167 bytes)120-2088_IMG.JPG (30449 bytes)120-2091_IMG.JPG (34585 bytes)120-2093_IMG.JPG (43238 bytes)120-2096_IMG.JPG (38090 bytes)120-2100_IMG.JPG (31148 bytes) (the welding is barely visible)

The Hub is in fairly good condition, one of the unique features of this hub is that it had a fixed sprocket - But this is not practical when the sprocket is worn down as in this case.

The sprocket has already been replaced at some point in time, since the sprocket is only 43T, where the original would have to be 47T.

I will fix this by removing the old worn out sprocket, and weld on another old 47T sprocket (4305-32 used for mounting with bolts), and the remove the teeth part. This way I will have a solid plate for mounting another sprocket.

Another unique thing about this sprocket is the way spokes are fixed on the hub. This is done directly through the brake drum itself, and a protection plate prevents any broken spokes from entering the brake drum is mounted by 3 screws.

120-2097_IMG.JPG (40678 bytes)120-2098_IMG.JPG (45430 bytes)

These 2 features are (as I am informed) only found in the 1931 model SQ4 rear hub. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)
