1931 Ariel SQ4 - Motor
Web Update Email Notification Service
The yellow sticky grease thing on the motor is easily removable - I guess it might have been used for motor protection, the metal is like polished beneath.
(This must the order of ignition )
Curious about the motor, I dismantled it since it was only put loosely
together.
A first look inside reveals something that looks like a .... comb.... no wonder
why it didn't start (-:
Removing the bottom half, reveals the comb as expected?? but also an extra conrod even though the seller told be that there would be one missing (now a total of five). Its like Christmas. The gears looks ok, only the gear on the Oil pump connection rod looks worn
The motor and other parts are cleaned, this took the most of a day!!
The oil pump might be a Pandora's box, Stay tuned (-:
But with good comes bad (the oil pump might get in this section !! ):
A previous service on the motor has been done to repair a crack in the motor block, it has been welded and the ball baring hole has been redone to fit a oversize ball baring. But apparently it has cracked again..... Great motor issue No. One - stay tuned
Last glance at the frame when shutting the lights off for a very productive day.
Motor + parts are bagged for transport to Niels Probst over the weekend. Niels are an expert in these engines, and would really like to help me get this SQ4 on its 2 wheels again. I greatly appreciate this.
(Its easier to look at motors when they are not covered in black grease)
Primary chain cover for the SQ4. Its in OK condition
Other pictures:
Im running out of space, Yes a motorcycle does take up alot more space when
dismantled than in one piece.
This rocker box is in ok condition, except for the missing Alu rim section, but
this might not be crusial, If so it will be fabricated.
Its time to concentrate more on the Crankshaft. I have 2 complete sets of crankshafts, one for the 500 and one for the 600 cc engine.
And as I want to use this bike for driving, i want to go for the 600cc engine style, as this has some fixes for some errors on the 500 engine.
Removing all the old and worn bearings:
Note the Spacer that accomodate for the timing gear on the 1 + 4 crankshaft.
(This was not on the 600 set of parts)
Removing all the old bigend bearings, these will have to be replaced with some
prety expensive bearings.
This is the end result, having a nice crankshaft, but there is still some work
to be done on this metal.
The conrods... Great to have some leftovers...
The Spare Gearbox from 1950.
