1931 Ariel SQ4 - Gearbox
Web Update Email Notification Service
Now I start to dismantle the gearbox, external damage is inevitable for such an old Gearbox.
The number "J19" is stamped in all three main parts of the Gearbox.
First cover is removed, to reveal a thick oil nearly completely hardent.
Second cover removed, and all the gears are removed. (These pictures will for sure help me to put it all together again!!)
Roller barring on one of the shafts.
A bush is cracked, along with others which are worn .
I have never seen this before, but between the gearbox case and the driving sprocket there are some kind of thick fabric. This would undoubtedly keep some of the oil from the gearbox inside. This should also be fitted on my KG500, but I didn't know it existed. (I suppose that item number 3099-48 for the KH / KG twin is a descendent )
Old oil is removed, to engage a better inspection.
All parts are cleaned and now its time for inspection/correction
I plan on changing all bushes, since nearly all of them are worn/cracked.
This is the Aluminium welders job. (does anyone know the reason to cutting off the pieces shown below? they are deliberately cut off using a metal saw, and then "welded" on again. The welding method used, was so poor, that I used a screwdriver to remove the welding material!!! - this calls for a real welder. )
A old foot change is riveted on the original hand change arm.
I have received a new Gearbox house from Willem, which will be cleaned and properly inspected soon.
